India Embraces The Great Khali

WWE may despise him, but The Great Khali has an enormous fan base in his native country of India.

In fact, no less a source than The Washington Post covered this wrestler's recent home coming. Here are excerpts from the newspaper's article on the event:

After two hours of swaying to thumping Bollywood neo-folk music and listening to stock stage jokes, the fans grew impatient and began chanting for the star of the evening to show up. "We want Khali! We want Khali!"

The Great Khali

And when the Goliath-size professional wrestler of that name appeared on stage in a blue cotton shirt, jeans and ponytail, thousands of hands thrust cellphone cameras into the air to capture the image.

"Khali, we love you," screamed men and women alike. "The Khali bomb!" yelled a male voice. Little boys tried to climb over barricades to get closer to the stage, on a college campus.

Paul Heyman: Randy Orton is Underutilized

Paul Heyman writes a column for The UK Sun. In his latest effort, the former ECW owner lists the top five talents he feels are the most underrated and underutilized in professional wrestling. They are:

5. Tito Ortiz: "Tito is finishing up his UFC contract this weekend. What does he do next? Wear out his name in MMA, or capitalize on his love for pro wrestling and exploit his larger than life personality by joining WWE or TNA? And remember, where Tito goes, so goes Jenna Jameson, the best self-promoter in show business today. "

4. Beth Phoenix: "It doesn't matter that she's already been WWE women’s champion, the audience hasn't even had a taste of what this phenomenal athlete is capable of."

3. James Mitchell: "The best backstage promo artist in the business, bar none. A brilliant spokesman who can articulate the merits of the opponent without selling his own act short."

2. The entire TNA Wrestling roster: "No long term concepts + bad television writing + zero marketing strategy = hard working talents whose efforts are wasted on a show that has not grown the audience whatsoever despite the tens of millions of dollars sunken into it."

1. Randy Orton: "When does Orton get to make you hate him so badly, you're willing to pay to see him get beat, or at least beaten up?"

Do you agree with these selections?

WWE issued the following this morning on WWE.com, making sense of last night's story line on WWE RAW:

World Wrestling Entertainment Suspends Performer

STAMFORD, Conn., May 20, 2008 - In accordance with its Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy, WWE has suspended Darren Matthews (William Regal) for 60 days for his second violation of the company’s policy

The length of the suspension indicates it is Regal's second Wellness Policy violation. He was "fired" last night on RAW after losing a match to Mr. Kennedy.

Jeff Hardy v. Umaga
Hardy went to the ropes but Umaga caught him by the hair. Hardy broke free and went for whisper in the wind and Umaga casually walked to the side, avoiding what beat him last week. Umaga went for the running bump butt, but Hardy backed off. Instead of pin balling everywhere, Hardy went right at Umaga and hit some right hands and a drop kick. Hardy eventually hit a mule kick and it sent the big man reeling to the ground. Hardy hit a plancha that resulted in both being laid out on the outside.

Both fought to their feet. Umaga whipped Hardy to the stairs, but missed the follow up. Hardy went to walk the rails but got caught and side walk slammed on the concrete. The official signaled for the bell and what we have here is a double count out.
Winner: Double Count Out

Regal comes out and says One Night Stand is right around the corner and it would consist of all extreme rules matches. Orton and JBL are on the titan tron. Regal said both men wanted rematches from Judgment Day. He said they’d get their chance tonight. If they won, both would get their rematches and they’d get to choose the stipulation. If Triple H and John Cena won the tag match, they would pick the stip.

Regal kept going on before Mr. Kennedy’s music hit and he came down to the ring. Kennedy challenged Regal to a match. Regal said Kennedy didn’t get it. He said he didn’t take challenges from common wrestlers. He said the next person who interrupted him would be fired.

Mr. McMahon’s music hit.

Kennedy mocked Regal until Vince told him to ‘shut up’. Vince said Regal was given 100% endorsement. He said ever since he gave him his endorsement, they have received, as a result of his abuse of power, more viewer complaints than at any other point in their history. Vince said he knew he didn’t care about the people, and he didn’t either, but he DID care about the money. He said for some reason, when he came on the air, the ratings would plummet. So in the interest of fairness, Vince said Regal wanted Kennedy gone. Vince said he did, too.

He said he didn’t like Kennedy but the viewers wanted Regal gone, not Kennedy. So tonight, we’d have a match, Regal v. Kennedy. The loser of the match would be gone.

Beth Phoenix v. Maria
Beth tossed Maria to the mat hard before bullying her into the corner. Beth military pressed Maria and just dropped her like a sack of potatoes. Beth laid Maria out with a backbreaker and stretched it out for some fun.

Maria countered with a quick bulldog for a two count and even tried a roll up but was quickly shoulder tackled to the mat. Maria went for some wheelbarrow move variant and got SMASHED face first to the mat. What an awesome squash.
Winner: Beth Phoenix

Batista v. Chris Jericho
Jericho planted a kick to the face of Batista before getting lifted with ease and planted on the mat for a two count. Batista kept up the pressure, choking Jericho out with his boot in the corner before tossing Jericho across the ring. Jericho whimpered on the ring apron looking like he hurt his knee. Batista doesn’t seem ready to fall for it.

Ashley Massaro Interview with WWE Magazine

Check out the following interview with one of our favorite WWE Divas, Ashley Massaro. It's courtesy of the latest edition of WWE Magazine:

We hate to bring up a sore subject, but how did you get tossed from Survivor after two episodes?

To make a long story short, never trust a male model. I thought Dave was a good guy, which was my biggest mistake. Well, that and maybe I shouldn't have drunk that muddy water. That's why I got sick. Man, my team became so mismanaged and disorganized. Were I in full health, things would have been different, and I definitely wouldn't have gotten kicked off so early.

Was it hard to return to the WWE?
I was so excited to be back! I couldn't get the smile off my face when I made my entrance. I surprised a lot of people - even my family - when I came out. And participating in the Lingerie Pillow Fight (on the 1/7/08 WWE Raw) was cool too. I'd never been in one, and I didn't really know how to brawl in it. I mean, is it wrong to choke someone with a pillowcase?

Do you feel like showing off your new hair style in another Playboy spread?

I'm really happy about how the last one turned out. Playboy catered the shoot to my personality. They spray-painted my tattoos on the set wall. So you never know, maybe I'll have another go at it.

Kelly Kelly: How I Became a WWE Diva

Hottie HottieKelly Kelly was recently interviewed by The Brisbane Times. Here's an excerpt from the article:

From high school cheerleader to aspiring journalist to saucy WWE Diva Kelly Kelly has followed a varied career path. The star will join fellow wrestlers including John Cena and Randy Orton on a WWE tour across Australia in June.

Kelly found her way into wrestling via modeling; she had been in college studying to become a broadcast journalist, with hopes of becoming a TV anchor.

"WWE contacted me through my modelling agency and they knew I had an athletic background so they sent me down to Atlanta, Georgia where they kicked my butt for a week straight and asked me if I wanted a job at the end of it," Kelly Kelly said.

Living the life of a professional wrestler - working in one of the world's most high-profile companies - is difficult, she said, with an almost constant training schedule, along with travel around the United States and overseas.

"Even on my off days now I'm still training, so I try to get into the ring and learn different stuff," she said. "We consider ourselves a big family [inside wrestling], some people have their own little cliques and we try to get along a best we can."

WWE Results: Judgment Day, 5-18-08

Here's what went down on WWE Judgment Day last night...

John Cena defeated JBL. Slow start with JBL working over Cena's left shoulder. John Cena woke up the crowd with a brief comeback. JBL locked Cena in a Full Nelson. Cena eventually broke the hold and went for the FU, but instead he sold it as if his shoulder was too far to executive the move. Ross described JBL as "motivated" and said Cena not being able to execute the move could be huge.

At 13:30, they broke into a brief slugfest. JBL nailed Cena with a big boot to the head and remained on offense. JBL continued to dominate the offense and then Cena hit the FU out of nowhere for the win.

John Morrison and The Miz beat Kane and CM Punk. The face team controlled the bulk of the action. Punk was especially dominant. Late in the match, Kane chokeslammed Miz on the floor after he interfered from the outside. In the ring, Morrison recovered and hit the Moonlight Drive for the win.

Shawn Michaels defeated Chris Jericho. Ten minutes in, Jericho locked HBK in the Liontamer. The crowd popped big and thought it was the finish. Michaels reached the ropes and many in the crowd were disappointed. Moments later, HBK hit Sweet Chin Music on Jericho, who was standing on the ring apron. The kicked knocked Jericho to the floor. Michaels went to ringside and carried Jericho back into the ring and went for a cover, but Jericho kicked out.

Michaels followed up with a top rope elbow drop. He went to the corner and tuned up the band. Jericho got to his feet, but fell back down. Michaels tuned up some more, but Jericho fell down again. Jericho stood up for a third time and Michaels went for kick the kick, but Jericho greeted him with the Codebreaker. Great spot. It took Jericho a while to recover and make the cover, so HBK kicked out.

Moments later, Michaels caught Jericho in the crossface. Jericho reached the ropes. Jericho regained control and went for the Lionsault. Michaels lifted his knees and Jericho landed on his feet and went for the Liontamer again, but Michaels rolled him up and scored the pin.

Mickie James defeated Beth Phoenix and Melina in a three-way to retain the WWE Women's Title. Mickie James hit a great dropkick to Beth's face. Beth recovered a short time later and picked up both women in an awesome double backbreaker. Just a short time later, Mickie hit a jumping DDT on Melina for the pin.

Undertaker defeated Edge via countout. After some solid, yet unspectacular action, Taker went for the gogoplata choke, but realized he couldn't use the hold. Taker took control of the offense and the pace picked up. Zach Ryder and Kurt Hawkins came to ringside to distract the referee momentarily. In the meantime, Edge removed one of the top turnbuckle pads.
