Wow. We didn't see this coming.

For personal reasons - he's been going through a divorce, for example - Kurt Angle has actually been released by the WWE. Here's the snippet from wwe.com:

Due to personal issues, Kurt Angle has been granted an early release from his contract. WWE looks forward to establishing a new relationship with Kurt in the near future.

They better establish that!

Angle, of course, is a six-time World Champion, having also held the Intercontinental Championship and WWE Tag Team Championship; he also won the 2000 King of the Ring tournament and has been in ECW for the last couple months.

It's looking more and more that fans won't have a chance to see the world's best wrestler in the ring for quite awhile. Reports state that Kurt Angle has suffered a groin tear, an injury more serious that previously believed.

Angle was scheduled to be involved in the Sabu vs Big Show match at SummerSlam making it a three-way affair for the ECW Title - but WWE decided to keep him out due to the groin.

From there, Angle was scheduled to work a squash match at the ECW house show on Monday night in Altoona, PA but was again pulled from the show.

For now, there are no plans for Angle to return. We'll keep you updated when this changes.

We'll be honest, we're not sure what Kurt Angle is doing in ECW. He's a brand name, the WWE obviously wants him to carry this new brand - but he's also a wasted talent now.

Angle may feel the same way. Reportledly, he's quite vocal in how he is being used in ECW, to the point that one insider described him as being “whiney.” Ouch!

Most wrestlers don’t have any problem with it, however, and view Angle as simply standing up for himself. But the writers do see it as a headache sometimes. In the past, Angle has always just gone with the flow and not offered any input for his character or storylines.

Making matters worse, The Wrestling Machine is really hurting at the moment. He usually puts up a tough fight before he lets an injury get the best of him, dating back to his amateur wrestling days. Therefore, there is major concern now that Angle could be out for awhile

ECW ratings, we're sure, would suffer if that were the case.
