Kurt Angle Defeats Brock Lesnar for IWGP Championship

On Friday in Tokyo, Japan, TNA Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle defeated longtime rival Brock Lesnar for the IWGP Championship in a match for Antonio Inoki’s new IGF wrestling promotion.

TNA Wrestling officials spoke by phone with Angle following the match, who had this to say:

“The IWGP Championship is the second title to add to my growing collection,” Angle said. “On July 15 at Victory Road, I’m going to add a third title – the TNA World Tag Team Championship. Then after Victory Road, there will only be one more title for me to win – and that’s to take the X Championship from that fat slob Samoa Joe!”

Angle finished up by saying: “It’s real…it’s damn real…thank you!”

Kurt Angle will be returning to the United States with both his TNA World Heavyweight Championship as well as the IWGP Championship.

Joanie Laurer Blasts Vince McMahon, WWE

Joanie Laurer In an interview on Jim Rome’s radio show, Joanie Laurer (Chyna) said there’s a lot of blame to go around for the Chris Benoit murder-suicide - and Vince McMahon deserves a lot of it.

The former WWE Diva said that she thinks steroids, depression, and mental stress were probably the main factors in Benoit committing these heinous acts. She also blasted WWE and McMahon, saying that he tends to wash his hands of any tragedy that happens in WWE and that she has no respect for the owner.

Laurer also said the WWE hid Benoit’s problems and described her own negative experiences in wrestling.

The Wrestling Post’s take: Laurer is desperate for attention and it’s despicable that she’s using this event to garner it. There’s no way the former Chyna has had any contact with Benoit in years; who is she to say what led to this horrific act?

This is a bitter former WWE star trying to find a way back into the spotlight. While wrestling has many internal problems to work on, it cannot be blamed for this sort of drastic, immoral, brutal course of action.

Strange Twist in Chris Benoit Murder Case

Fourteen hours before investigators discovered the bodies of Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and their 7-year-old son, Daniel, someone updated the professional wrestler’s Wikipedia biography entry to include his wife’s death.

Benoit’s page on Wikipedia, a reference site that allows users to add and edit information, was altered at 12:01 a.m. Monday, though authorities did not find the bodies until after 2 p.m. that afternoon. The entry cited that the reason Benoit missed a match Saturday night was “stemming from the death of his wife Nancy.”

Wrestlemania Press Conference

Us Magazine reports that Wikipedia confirmed the time stamp’s authenticity. The entry was updated by someone using an IP address registered in Stamford, Connecticut, where World Wrestling Entertainment is based.

On Friday, an anonymous user with the same IP address confessed on WikiNews to making the changes to the entry, but explained that the edit was just a “terrible coincidence” fueled by rumors and gossip.

“I just can’t believe what I wrote was actually the case, I’ve remained stunned and saddened over it,” the alleged user wrote.

WWE Spoilers: Smackdown Results, 6-29-07

The following Smackdown report is courtesy of lordsofpain.net…

Ric Flair def. Carlito by submission. Standard back and forth match, finish came when Carlito BADLY missed a dropkick (he practically stuck his leg out for Flair to catch), allowing Flair to counter into the figure four. Carlito reached the ropes, but Flair pulled Carlito back into the middle of the ring, dropped a few shots on the knee, and re-applied the figure four for the win.

Matt Hardy def. Lance Cade by pinfall. Matt Hardy had the second-biggest face pop of the night, second only to Batista. He hits the Twist of Fate to gain the pinfall on Cade.

Edge, Batista Chavo Guerrero def. Jamie Noble and Funaki by pinfall in a Triple Threat match to retain the WWE Cruiserweight Title. Can someone remind us when the heck did either Noble or Funaki earn a title shot? And why wasn’t Jimmy Wang Yang even in the mix? Chavo actually got a few face chants in Texas, and eventually scored the win with a Gory Bomb on Funaki.

Edge is backstage with Vickie Guerrero in Teddy Long’s office. Long isn’t in the house tonight, and Edge threatens not to participate in the match at all. Vickie assures Edge that the match tonight is non-title, and Edge accepts but is officially under protest.

Deuce & Domino (w/ Cherry) def. Cryme Tyme by pinfall. JTG played the face in peril for most of the match. Shad Gaspar cleans house for a while, until Cherry distracts the ref as Cryme Tyme attempt their neckbreaker combo finisher. Domino low-bridges JTG outside of the ring, allowing Deuce to roll-up Gaspar with a handful of jeans for the win. After the match, Deuce & Domino stayed in the ring to celebrate, but the camera cut backstage to Cryme Tyme discovering the unguarded car that Deuce & Domino drove out to the ring. Cryme Tyme hotwires the car and takes off, as the heels take off in pursuit on foot.

Kane def. MVP by pinfall. MVP takes a chapter out of “How To Win Friends And Influence People” by saying he’s a better baller than either Tim Duncan or Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs. Instant over-the-top heel heat. Kane pretty much dominated most of the match with his power. MVP stunned Kane in the corner and went for his running kick, but Kane caught the boot coming in. It also got MVP off balance to where Kane quickly planted the chokeslam to get the win.

Mickie James and Victoria are talking backstage as to who is the better WWE Diva of them. James challenges Victoria to kiss the next man who walks through the door. Howard Finkel comes in, and walks past the ladies, as Victoria states that she wasn’t warmed up yet. Next man through the door is Hacksaw Jim Duggan. He walks through the doorway past the ladies, as Victoria complains that Duggan was going too fast to kiss. Victoria then challenges Mickie James to try it herself. The doorway opens to - Oily Fat Guy. Fortunately for Mickie, he is cut off by Ron Simmons who gets through the doorway first and gets a wet kiss from Mickie. Oily Fat Guy does his dance for Simmons, getting the requisite response — DAMN!

Mickie James def. Victoria by pinfall. Victoria misses a moonsault, allowing Mickie to roll her up for the pin.

Great Khali def. Eugene by pinfall. Chop to the head, choke bomb, pinfall. Thank God we didn’t have to watch Khali in the ring for more than 30 seconds.

Batista def. Edge by pinfall. The two biggest pyros in the WWE face off. Decent matchup, but everyone in the building knew the ending before it happened. Batista countered one spear into a spinebuster, the second spear attempt was countered by a well-timed leapfrog to where Edge’s head wound up between Batista’s legs, setting Edge up for the Batista Bomb, and the victory for Batista.

Matt Hardy Comments on Chris Benoit Tragedy

Matt Hardy posted the following on his MySpace.com blog…

I haven’t always agreed with every decision Vince McMahon has made, but I do agree with everything he’s done dealing with this situation thus far. Out of respect for the sudden death of Benoit’s family and his contributions to the business, I think Vince did the right thing by canceling the scheduled Raw. When the decision was made to make Raw a Chris Benoit tribute show, the WWE was only doing what seemed respectful and right at that time.

At the Doctor When more information was discovered, the WWE took a different and appropriate stance towards their programming. The ECW and Smackdown shows this week were dedicated to our great fans. Wrestling fans who were grieving and confused over this tragedy needed us, including me, to entertain them. I feel it is my responsibility, as well as my pleasure, to put smiles on people’s faces and give them an escape from reality. I know Vince feels that way as well.

Chris Benoit was always kind, considerate, and professional when I interacted with him. Like everyone else, I was shocked when everything came out. I can’t believe Chris Benoit and his wife and child are dead as I type this. As of now, all of the strange pieces of this puzzle haven’t been put together yet. My thoughts and prayers go out to Benoit’s other two children as well as the immediate family and friends of the deceased. More than anything, I feel terrible for little Daniel–he was as innocent as any human being could possibly be. This is a terrible and sad tragedy.

I am very disappointed with how many media outlets are lapping the entire population of professional wrestlers into this situation. There are many outstanding, wonderful people that do so many great things for the world that I work and wrestle with. It’s not fair or accurate.

Tell the people you love that you love them, and never lose sight of what’s really important in life. We may not ever understand why this tragedy happened, but we have to learn from it. Stay strong–life is too precious and too short. I have much more I want to say about the activities of the last few days. If it’s appropriate, I definitely will. Be well my friends, I’ll talk to you soon…

DEA Raids Office of Chris Benoit’s Doctor

Drug agents raided the office of Chris Benoit’s personal physician, a spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Atlanta has confirmed to People magazine.

Special Agent Chuvalo Truesdell said that the raid took place Wednesday night at the office of Dr. Phil Astin in Carrollton, Ga.

“There’s definitely a nexus between the death investigation and the steroids that were given to [Chris Benoit],” Truesdell said.

On the Mic After Benoit killed his wife and son and then committed suicide over the weekend, police found prescription medications, including steroids, in his Fayetteville, Ga., home.

According to Atlanta’s Fox 5 news, investigators said Dr. Astin’s name was on prescription bottles found in the home.

DEA agents working with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Astin’s office around 10 p.m. and spent about four hours on the premises, reviewing records and removing documents, Truesdell said.

Truesdell noted that steroids can be legally prescribed by physicians, but at this early stage in the investigation, “We just don’t know what the medical situation was and to what extent steroids played a part” in Benoit’s actions.

“The doctor is a person of interest to us at this stage,” Capt. Mike Pruitt, commander of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office drug task force, tells People.

Astin, a longtime friend of Benoit as well as his doctor, told the Associated Press on Wednesday he had been treating the wrestler for low testosterone levels, most likely resulting from previous steroid use.

Recap of Vince McMahon on The Today Show

Vince McMahon appeared on NBC’s Today Show this morning.

Host Meredith Viera questioned WWE’s press release from Tuesday, asking Vince how he could be so sure in stating that steroids could not have been to blame when results of toxicology tests won’t be known for several weeks yet. McMahon answered by trying to explain that the statement was aimed at saying “roid rage” couldn’t have been to blame, going on to say the statement that WWE released was a reaction to media hysteria on Tuesday.

McMahon referred to Chris Benoit as “a monster,” saying this was “an act of deliberation” and not something brought on my uncontrolled, immediate anger.

Vince spoke about how WWE is all about “putting smiles on people’s faces.“

When WWE’s Wellness Policy was brought up, he replied: “Last February (2006), we instituted a wellness policy to police for steroids or abuse of prescription drugs. We do urine and blood tests and things of that nature to determine…as well as test the cardio aspect of things to test for heart disease and heart failure…The last test he took of a random nature was in April and it was totally negative. That doesn’t mean he was not taking prescription medication or steroids when this happened. We don’t know.”

McMahon went on to talk of how people in his company are “well-adjusted, family people,“ adding that “we won’t know until we get the toxicology reports back. Once we get those back, we’re dealing in real facts. There was no way to tell this man was a monster. He was a mild-mannered individual.”

ECW Ratings Rise in Face of Chris Benoit Tragedy

This week’s ECW on Sci-Fi rating rose to a 1.78 househould rating.

The show, which WWE Chairman Vince McMahon dubbed the beginning of the “healing process,” aired before 2.4 million viewers.

WWE Diva Jillian Lays into Chris Benoit, Prays for Family

Jillian wrote the following on her MySpace page:

“Well, by now the whole world knows of the horrible news that took place this week. With all of the comments and messages from people saying how sorry they are for our loss, I figured I would speak in general. I am 100% in agreeance with WWE and Mr. McMahon on completely erasing all tributes to Chris Benoit.

While he had always been nice and polite to me and most of the WWE talent, what he did is completely disgusting and unforgiveable! This man who could have been a legend has demolished his reputation. My heart goes out to Nancy and the adorable Daniel and the family and friends they left behind!”

Bret Hart Discusses Chris Benoit, WWE Steroids Policy

Bret Hart was a guest last night on Fox News Channel’s Greta Van Susteren.

Pro Wrestling Torch reports that Hart said he knew Benoit as a fan of pro wrestling when he was just 10-12 years old attending matches. He said his father brought him back to meet he and some other wrestlers. He said he was a kid who was obsessed with wrestling and wanted to meet his hero, the Dynamite Kid. He said he knew from a very early age Chris would become a wrestler.

Bret Hart Pic “He was great. He was one of the best,” he said. “He was a guy who was loved by everybody in the dressing room. Even the really tough guys in the dressing room respected Chris Benoit. he was a guy who reached down and helped the young guys starting out. He had a lot of respect for the guys who worked really hard. In the dressing room, he would have been a leader who really hard and set the example for everyone else.

Everyone in the wrestling business is reeling from this. Nobody would have expected this to come from Chris Benoit. He was an easy-going lovable guy. I don’t remember him being moody or bad-tempered or violent in any way at all. He was a guy who was a very caring, supportive guy. He supported me in a lot of situations. It’s a shock to everybody.”

Greta asked about Bret’s talks with Benoit’s living kids from the previous marriage: “Well, they’re hanging in there. They’re a tough family and a strong family. I don’t think anyone saw this coming. They’re as confused by this as everyone else. He’s trying to stay strong. I already spoke to Chris’s sister. They devastated by it, but they’ll get through it.”

Greta asked if Chris used steroids: “I’m sure he used them through his career. I never saw him personally take them. My understanding, and I have no reason to blur the truth, I think when Eddie Guerrero died a year and a half ago, WWE put in a really strict drug testing policy and they’ve been trying to stamp out steroids. I know from talking to other wrestlers, a lot of them were really careful not to have anything in their system. It seemed to be a real serious test.

So I’m of the conviction at this point that steroids, if they were in his house, they were for something he had stockpiled or was planning on using. If they tested him a few months ago and he was clean, I suspect that he was obliging the tests and following the rules.”

Greta asked if there was something wrong with Daniel: “I never knew of anything to be wrong with him at all. I was real surprised to hear he had autism and this stuff about him being a dwarf. I never saw him as a dwarf and I never heard Chris ever mention it to me.” Greta asked if he saw the child and thought he looked small. Bret said: “He may have looked a little small, but Chris looked a little small, too. Chris was not the biggest guy in the world, either. I wouldn’t have noticed it enough to make a fair assessment of that.”
