Cena Finds a Friend in DX: WWE RAW Results, 9-18-06

The show opened with Lillian Garcia introducing the new WWE Champion, John Cena.

Cena came out to the usual mixed reaction, w/ the Montreal crowd heavily booing the new champ. JR and King gave Edge credit for his performance last night, but also hyped Cena’s resilience in winning a match he’d never previously taken part in. Cena grabbed a mic and looked around at the anti-Cena crowd that was booing him. He laughed off the haters, but finally managed to say that he was in the midst of chaos (referring to the crowd). He said that normally he’d say that tonight would be huge, but tonight he really wasn’t himself. The crowd didn’t let up, continuing to heavily boo him. Cena continued, saying that the bottom line was that he was hit in the head a lot last night. He said everything was starting to become clear, though, and he now could finally say that, low and behold, the champ is here. Cena said that no matter what the crowd thought, his win last night was big.

Cena said that after all that has happened in the last nine months during his feud with Edge, the story was finally over. The crowd was chanting “Boring” at that point, but they erupted when Edge (w/ Lita) came walking down to the ring. Edge walked with a noticeable limp and a bandaged elbow. Upon entering the ring w/ a mic, he asked Cena if he believed all the crap he was talking. He said Cena’s win last night was a fluke just like the rest of his career, and when he used his rematch clause, he’d win his third WWE title. Cena told him to listen, telling him that last night he saw fire and hunger that he’d not previously seen from him…and he respects Edge for that. The crowd chanted “Cena Sucks,” as Cena said that if Edge wanted to talk the way he was talking right now, he had one of two options. A) He could have a live sex celebration and screw himself. B) He could challenge him for the WWE title right now. Edge said that he didn’t have a desire to win the title back in Montreal…which he said was not apart of Canada. He said that last night he took more physical punishment than most people took in their entire lives. An FU thru two ladders? Most people would’ve given up, but he didn’t.

Thus, he said he’d take his title back whenever he wanted, but not tonight. Cena said it took Edge 30-seconds to turn on Edge and favor Cena kicking his ass. The Champ said that he was just as beat up as Edge and asked the former champ what he wanted. Edge said he wanted payback for the worst night of his life, in which he lost his match in his hometown, w/ his mom in attendance…plus the WWE title. Cena told him to call the wambulance. Edge told him to shut up, at which point Cade and Murdoch showed up and leveled the champion. The three heels then took turns stomping away at the champ…Well, that is until DX showed up! Edge took off, as DX took out Murdoch and Cade. The Coach then made his way out to the top of the ramp and made a six-man tag between Cena/DX and Edge, Murdoch, and Cade. Triple H gave Cena a bunch of nasty looks.

Backstage, Coach addressed the McMahons and told them that a lot of stars wanted to tell them how sorry they were that they lost last night. Shelton Benjamin was up first, and he told Mr. McMahon that if he’d been his partner last night instead of Show, they wouldn’t have lost last night. He asked why McMahon didn’t choose him? Shelton concluded that it was because he was black.

Match 1: Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada) vs. Kane
- The two traded shoulder tackles to start the match, but neither would fall. Thus, they began trading punches…that is, until, Umaga caught Kane w/ a belly-to-belly suplex. AAE, meanwhile, fetched a chair. The ref bumped soon after when AAE tried to hand the chair to Umaga. Kane splashed both Umaga and the ref in the corner. The Big Red Machine followed by giving the Samoan Bulldozer a DDT. With the ref down, Umaga eventually blasted Kane right in the face with the chair. He made the cover, but during the time it took to get a new ref, Kane recovered and was able to kick out.

Back from the break, Kane was hammering away at Umaga, but the undefeated monster came back with a Samoan Drop. He then connected on a modified Flatliner. Kane backed up into the corner, allowing Umaga to charge for a running hip smash. Unfortunately for Umaga, Kane got up and hit a reverse elbow. Kane followed with two clotheslines, but Umaga wouldn’t fall. It took a running shoulder tackle to get Umaga to fall, but Umaga quickly came back and threw Kane over the top rope. Kane landed on the apron and hung Umaga’s neck across the top rope. With Umaga reeling, Kane grabbed the chair and came back into the ring. Umaga blocked his attempt to use it, though. Kane stayed on the offensive with a big boot and flying clothesline from the top rope. Instead of going of the chokeslam to finish it, though, Kane drilled Umaga three times in the head with that steel chair. Umaga defeated Kane via DQ at 8:10.

Maria waved hello to Vince and told him that she’d been watching his DVD and was waiting to get to the good part. She got him confused w/ former Bears QB Jim McMahon. The Spirit Squad interrupted her and apologized for his loss last night. Johnny dedicated his upcoming match with Ric Flair to Vince.

Match 2: Ric Flair vs. Johnny (w/ the Spirit Squad)
- Johnny grabbed a headlock to start and took Flair down w/ a shoulder tackle out of an Irish whip. Flair came back with chops and a back elbow smash. He followed with a jumping knee drop, which sent Johnny to the outside to recover. Flair followed, but ended up getting poked in the eye and back dropped on the floor. Back in the ring, Johnny hammered away at Flair w/ straight right handed shots. Flair came right back with several knife edge chops, but Johnny quickly regained momentum with a chop block. Johnny then locked in the Figure Four, but Flair made it to the ropes. Flair ended up on the apron, but Johnny suplexed him over the top rope back into the ring.

The Squad member then went to the top rope and came off looking for a flying spinning wheel kick. Flair moved, though, and gave Johnny a chop block soon after. He worked over the knee, but Johnny rolled him up for a near fall. The finish came when Flair reversed the roll-up at the last second and small packaged Johnny for the win. Flair defeated Johnny at 3:08.

Backstage, Lita said she was sorry about Vince, but wanted back the Women’s title. Micke James interrupted and made fun of Lita for thinking she should be handed back the belt. James said it was great that Trish went out on top and insulted Lita. Lita slapped Mickie in retaliation and walked off.

Randy Orton made his way down to the ring, as King and JR alluded to his victory over Carlito last night. Orton grabbed a microphone and, sporting a busted lip, said that despite the fact that he got his face busted up, he still won at Unforgiven. He called his performance last night one of the most courageous in WWE history, further proving that he is the future of the entire wrestling industry.

At that point, Intercontinental Champion Johnny Nitro (w/ Melina) came down to the ring. Nitro grabbed a mic, placed the IC title on his shoulder, and questioned Orton’s comments. He called himself the future of the industry, and also took issue with those that found his mic skills boring. Nitro held the IC title high in the air and asked Randy where his championship was. He said Orton had been coasting on his reputation for years and while he was talking about getting to the top, others like him (Nitro) were making it to the top. Orton said he could take the IC title whenever he wanted and take Melina in the process. At that point, Chris Masters came to the ring and claimed that he was the future of the business. Why? Because nobody can break the Masterlock. Orton and Nitro had a hearty laugh at that notion.

Melina asked if he could even spell future, while Orton reminded him that lost the last two weeks. Nitro said that this ring was for winners and adults, and implied that Masters didn’t belong. At that point, Carlito came to the ring slowly w/ mic in hand, and admitted that he lost last night. He told Orton that there was something about him that he should know…Carlito is a sore loser. He attacked Orton, but ended up getting triple teamed by the heels. Super Crazy came to the ring and helped out, but then Jeff Hardy came out to even the odds.

Match 3: Hardy vs. Carlito vs. Masters vs. Crazy vs. Orton vs. IC Champion Nitro (w/ Melina)
- The match despicably began during a commercial break. Back from the break, Crazy hit a springboard moonsault on Nitro. Meanwhile, Masters pulled and dropped Orton from the ropes. Orton recovered soon after and hit a European uppercut on Hardy. Carlito and Masters paired up, while Orton went to work on Hardy. Nitro scored a near fall on Crazy during the melee. The champion tossed Crazy out of the ring and went to work on Hardy. Hardy hit him with a jawbreaker, though. Jeff’s offense was short-lived, as Nitro came right back with a modified Rock Bottom into a backbreaker, which he followed up with a side Russian leg sweep. Eventually, Carlito hit a springboard back flip, but landed on his feet. Masters fell down anyway and sold like he’d been hit. Meanwhile, Hardy caught Nitro’s attempt at a top rope splash and turned it into a powerslam for a near fall. Hardy then turned his attention toward Orton and gave him a leg drop.

Orton came back and hung up Hardy’s gut on the top rope. Super Crazy hit a running dropkick on Nitro. Orton and Nitro later double-teamed Carlito, but CCC came back with chops and eye rakes. Carlito then caught Orton on the outside with a plancha over the top rope. Hardy joined them with a high flying splash of his own. Crazy tried to one-up him, but Nitro tripped him up. Nitro tried to steal Crazy’s thunder, but his plancha caught nothing, but the floor. Crazy recovered and joined the 5-man battle on the outside with an Asai moonsault from the top rope. Back from the break, everyone was down, but Carlito scurried over to Orton to get a quick near fall. Crazy broke up the attempt. Hardy threw Masters out of the ring. Meanwhile, Orton caught Nitro with a powerslam, but multiple wrestlers broke up the pin attempt. Carlito then mounted Nitro in the corner for seven punches, but then noticed Orton standing wearily behind him. Thus, Carlito came off the second rope with a body block for a near fall. He later hit a jumping flatliner on Nitro. Orton tried to throw Carlito out of the ring, but CCC landed on the apron. Carlito tried to springboard back into the ring, but Orton blocked him with a nice dropkick that sent CCC to the floor. Hardy then caught fire and went wild on all the heels. It didn’t last long, though, as Orton stopped his momentum and hit Nitro with the RKO. Carlito came back in and hit Orton with the Back Cracker. Masters followed that by locking CCC in the Masterlock.

The submission was broken up, allowing Crazy to go up top and attempt a moonsault on Orton. Hardy got to him before he could leap, and then headed up top and nailed the Swanton Bomb on the Legend Killer. The finish came soon after, when Nitro stole the pin and retained the IC title at an estimated 13:16.

The SD! Rebound highlighted the Finlay-Batista and Booker-Lashley feuds,. We doubt it would be considered a No Mercy spoiler to claim the former will be a match at the event.

Match 4: Candice Michelle vs. Lita
- Lita started off with a shove and a right handed punch. The crowd chanted “boring” before they’d really even done anything. Lita continued to dominate, but Candice came back with a stiff kick and a decent looking spinning wheel kick. Candice was unable to maintain control, as Lita regained momentum with some antics on the outside. Back in the ring, Lita kicked away at Candice before giving her a snap suplex. Lita then locked in a sleeper hold. Candice tried to fight back, but to no avail…Lita caught her with a side Russian leg sweep. The accents of the crowd made it hard to hear what they were saying, but I’m pretty sure it ranged from “You can’t wrestle” to “She’s a crack whore.”

Anyhow, Candice surprised Lita with a school boy for a near fall, but Lita came right back. Lita slammed her and went to the top for a moonsault, but Mickie James came out and provided a distraction that led to Candice recovering, catching up to Lita, and giving the former women’s champ a powerbomb for the upset win. Candice defeated Lita at 5:38.

Backstage, Cade and Murdoch told a worrisome-looking Edge to let them do the dirty work, as they were the freshest and wouldn’t have any problem dealing with three guys who’d just been in brutal matches the previous night.

Match 5: Edge (w/ Lita), Cade, and Murdoch vs. Degeneration X and WWE Champion John Cena
- All six men brawled to start the match, but the faces quickly cleared the ring of the heels. Cena started off official action against Cade. Cade took control early with bruising, yet simplistic offense. Cena came back with a diving shoulder tackle and the Prototype spinning back drop. He went for the Five Knuckle shuffle and connected on the fist drop, much to the dismay of Edge and Murdoch. HBK tagged in soon after and picked up where Cena left off. Murdoch made a blind tag, though, allowing he and Cade to his an inverted atomic drop and big boot combo to gain some much needed momentum for the heels. Edge tagged in and mocked HBK. He then hit a standing dropkick and tagged Murdoch back into the match. Michaels fought back, but the younger, fresher star prevailed. Cheap heel tactics followed and quick tags made to isolate HBK.

Cade hit a falling neckbreaker after a Murdoch jawbreaker, and then Edge tagged back in and synched in a chin lock. HBK fought back, but Edge scored with a back elbow smash. Murdoch tagged back in and gave HBK several elbow drops. HBK fought back again and eventually made the hot tag to Trips. HHH came in and cleaned house with his typical arsenal. He went for the Pedigree on Edge, but Cade clotheslined the Game to stop the finisher. Cena came into the ring and took out Cade, while Edge retrieved a chair. Edge tried to use it, but Trips hit a spinebuster. The finish came when HBK picked up the chair and used it on Murdoch. Thus, Edge, Murdoch, and Cade won the match via DQ at 7:49.
